Red Velvet
Red Velvet is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment, debuting on August 1, 2014, with the digital single "Happiness." The original lineup included Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, and Joy, with Yeri joining in March 2015 following the release of their first extended play, Ice Cream Cake.
The group's name reflects their dual musical concepts: the "red" side embodies vibrant pop, while the "velvet" side showcases smooth R&B influences. This versatility is evident in their discography, which includes multiple chart-topping releases. Notably, their singles "Red Flavor" and "Power Up" reached number one on the Gaon Digital Chart, and albums like The Red (2015) and Perfect Velvet (2017) topped the South Korean Circle Album Chart.
Red Velvet has received numerous accolades, including the Golden Disc New Artist Award and the Mnet Asian Music Award for Best Female Group. Their influence extends internationally, with recognition from Time and Billboard as one of the most popular K-pop groups. In 2020, they were the fifth most-streamed K-pop artist worldwide on Spotify.
Beyond music, members have pursued individual activities in acting, hosting, and fashion, contributing to the group's dynamic presence in the entertainment industry. Their adaptability and diverse musical styles have solidified Red Velvet's status as a leading figure in the K-pop genre.
